About Seal Beach, CA
There has always been one constant in the history of Seal Beach among its ups and downs. People always come for the ocean air and the sunshine.
This region was originally inhabited by the Gabrielino Indians who spoke the Shoshone language. They weren't warlike and were a friendly, nomadic people who built enjoyed the mild climate and built winter shacks. They mixed easily with other people who arrived in the area. There was always plenty of food for everybody. Although they were well known for their somewhat proficient basket weaving, the Gabrielinos seem to have existed next to the banks of the San Gabriel River in a state of continual clambake, barbeque, and beach party atmosphere.
The location of the current Rancho Los Alamitos was once the village of Puvungas, which was the center of the legend of the coastal Indians. This Rancho was a portion of the famous California Land Grant by the Spanish. A man named Abel Stearns was granted 200,000 acres of that Rancho that included the current location of Seal Beach in 1862.
Sometime later, a man who was raised on Rancho Los Alamitos, named Fred Bixby, managed, co-owned, and owned managed a million acres in Arizona and California and Arizona, including portions of Seal Beach. Some 90% of the shareholders of the Bixby Ranch Company were Bixby family members, and they still have real estate holdings in Seal Beach. In 1871, a man named I. W. Hellman founded the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Los Angeles. Mr. Hellman was another early landowner in the area.
Mr. Stearns sold much of the Rancho Alamitos land to Mr. Hellman, John Bixby and his cousin, named Jotham Bixby during the late 1800's. Much of the history of Seal Beach is still connected to the names Hellman and Bixby. Originally, the Hellman Ranch was a Spanish land grant that was reportedly bought for three cents an acre.
The German Burghers founded the village of Anaheim following the gold rush during the 1800's. The Burghers used Anaheim Landing close to the location of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, to on load their goods in 1867. They had started spend their pleasant summer days on the coast by the 1870's. It wasn't long before long the location became one of the most popular summer vacation destinations. The still water of the bay was a place where their children could safely swim.
An associate of a man named H. E. Huntington, Mr. Hellman, and Mr. Bixby named C. Ord established the first general store on the corner of what is currently Electric Avenue and Main Street in 1901. During this time the only year round resident was a retired Yankee Civil War veteran. A man named Philip Stanton was another associate of Mr. Ord. He is considered to be the father of Huntington Beach, Stanton, as well as Seal Beach.
Mr. Stanton was a state assemblyman from Los Angeles and had a dream of making the coastal region a famous resort vacation destination. Located at the end of, what at the time, was the longest pier was the Jewel Cafe, where people could enjoy games, dancing, and dining. The Derby roller coaster provided the thrill of a lifetime and there were 50 scintillator lights at the end of the pier that lit up the evening sky.
The year 1915 brought the incorporation of Seal Beach as a city. Hollywood found the new city the ideal location to film movies with its popular attractions and sunny weather. The Ten Commandments was filmed by Cecil B. DeMille in Seal Beach in 1923.
Land developers were busy luring people to come to the region to buy real estate about this time. However, the majority of the land deals failed. Then, the Great Depression came and the many amenities such as the roller coaster and the Jewel Café fell into disrepair and eventually were hauled away.
After that, as the result of a lack of police enforcement, Seal Beach was considered an open town. Old timers still tell stories about the Seal Beach of that era being a place where prostitution could be found in several establishments on Main Street and a drop off point for rum runners during prohibition.
However, in the 1940's during WW II, people started to raise the families in the Seal Beach area with the influx of sailors from the Navy. An organization known as The Good Government Group was formed by some residents and worked hard to remove the less than desirable elements from the community. This effort wasn't taken well by the gambling hall at the Airport Club. During the 1950's gambling was stopped, although it required three elections in one year and 11 recall attempts in five years, which each cost $1,500 to finally close down the Airport Club.
The economic level of the people living in Seal Beach started to increase with several new businesses and the growing aerospace industry. The community started growing. The Marina Hill area came after Old Town, which, in 1964, was followed by College Park West and, in 1965, College Park East was started and, in 1970, was completed.
The Surfside Colony is considered the first beach resort community of its kind on the west coast as it was established in 1929. In 1957, a man named Ross Cortese built a retirement community that is comprised of almost one third of the community's residents known as Leisure World.
During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Seal Beach still had somewhat of an outlaw image. There were many different storefronts boarded up on Main Street. However, the character of Main Street started to change as the community and the times became increasingly more sublime.
These days the population of year round residents is approximately 26,000 people. Seal Beach is considered one of the safest communities in Orange County. Real estate in Seal Beach is continually selling at a premium. The Los Alamitos Unified School District is one of the most celebrated school systems in the state. Seal Beach is also considered one of the best places to raise a family on the coast.
